Spring 2013 Technology through the Arts Residencies Program

Applications for school-based Technology through the Arts Artist Residencies are currently being accepted with a deadline of March 8, 2013. For the application, click here.

For more than 20 years the Brevard Cultural Alliance (BCA) Artist Residencies program has provided quality arts education opportunities in schools and community sites. The primary goal has been to enhance the existing arts curriculum with exciting and challenging arts experiences, as well as to integrate art instruction into other subject areas.

Through each residency a visual, performing, or literary BCA artist is selected by the school to partner with a teacher to form a team which, with the assistance of BCA staff, develops and implements an intensive series of classroom sessions to immerse students in a particular art form through participative in-depth activities.

BCA is a committed partner of BPS able to channel existing resources within the arts sector for the benefit of Brevard students and schools. BCA's art education programming is multifaceted, offering a variety of activities that better respond to the needs of each school and department.

BCA support BPS Goals and Education in general by providing high quality experiences in the field of arts education to strengthen communities and to build and sustain a vibrant arts and cultural sector, as well enhance all schools programs.

      Residencies' Core Elements & Objectives

  • Promote arts and culture as integral parts of education, personal growth and community
  • Provide students with knowledge and skills essentials to be college and career ready for the modern world, which is the ultimate goal of Common Core State Standards (CCSS)
  • Implement strategies and methods to increase students' cognitive engagement.
  • Foster "project-based" education, through a “learn by doing” approach.
  • Emphasize student acquisition of 21st Century Skills.
  • Focus on exploration of career options in the arts or arts-related fields.
  • Provide interdisciplinary/cross-curricular experiences that integrate the arts in other subject areas.

Technology through the Arts Residencies is the first in a series of arts education initiatives for 2013-14.

BCA is actively planning for programs in other arts disciplines to include music, dance and theatre.

This program enhances student appreciation and understanding of visual arts in the digital domain and the arts, in general, by creation of artwork using a variety of basic software tools.

Through the residency, students will acquire basic computer knowledge, including the use of external hardware, as well enhance knowledge of design principles and their use to communicate ideas and for personal expression.

BCA will offer three types of Technology through the Arts residencies during Spring 2013:

  • 3D Digital Modeling. Students will use software suitable for a broad range of applications in architecture, interior design, film and video game design. Using "Sketchup" students can draw planar (flat) faces and learn how to push and pull them to easily create three-dimensional designs.
  • 3D Digital Sculpting. Participants will work with "Sculptris" a computer program that works with the principle of "virtual" modeling clay. Its tools are very intuitive and with basic knowledge users can create organic models and characters by pulling, pushing, pinching and twisting the modeling clay.
  • 2 Dimensional Digital Art. Students will learn to use software similar to Photoshop such as Gimp and Paint.Net to do digital image retouching, editing, free-form drawing, resizing, cropping and photo-montages. These tools can be used to create a variety of 2D projects.

Each recipient school will receive:

  • 30 hours of instruction from a BCA Arts & Digital Media specialist (ADMS).
  • Assistance in the installation of the software, as required.
  • Materials costs (up to $400 per school to purchase materials or upgrade equipment).
  • Operational cost (Includes coordination/support and Insurance).
