Biography

Janis Teruggi Page, a Chicago native, has been a practicing abstract artist for more than 20 years. She splits her time between studios in Wilmette, Illinois and Rockledge, Florida and has traveled extensively in Europe, South America, and the Middle East. Her abstract compositions draw from these experiences, influenced by coastal and tropical nature, portals and pathways, and global music and dance.

Her practice has benefited from dozens of professional arts development programs, beginning with the 1st-year foundation program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her passion for art continued at the University of California, Berkeley where she earned an English B.A. with a minor in fine art. She worked as a marketing creative director for national and regional media companies in the U.S. for two decades before studying art history at the University of Missouri where she earned a doctorate in mass communication with a minor in visual studies. Since 2005, she has taught visual communication at the university level.

Janis has studied abstract composition at the Foosaner Education Center in Melbourne, FL, at the North Shore Arts League, Evanston Art Center, and the Fine Line Creative Arts Center in suburban Chicago, and through online workshops with Chicago artist Janet Trierweiler. Janis is co-author of the book Visual Communication Insights and Strategies (Wiley, 2020) and is currently a faculty member of the communication department at the University of Illinois, Chicago.
