As a painter uses paint, so do the members of the Dirty Dozen Fiber artists use fabric. They cut and place it to create dynamic compositions. Along the way they may also scrunch it, tear it, burn it, weave it, foil it, paint it, dye it, stitch it, or glue it.
Begun in 2003 as the Dirty Dozen Art Quilters, this twelve-member group consisted of women with backgrounds in traditional quilting. However, all of them had begun to experiment with a variety of techniques and materials, moving themselves firmly into the world of art quilting. Together, they gathered once a month to explore new processes and design principles to visually strengthen their 2D stitched compositions.
As the years went by, some of the characters changed and the artists expanded their materials to include window screening, melted plastic, paper, plants, recycled materials and more. Their work grew to include 3D sculptures and more mixed media work. To reflect these changes, in 2007 the name of the group was changed to Dirty Dozen Fiber Artists. Today the group continues to meet, play, experiment and have fun with their media of choice.
